Review :
It’s difficult to treat “Carrie” too preciously. After all, the 1974 Stephen King novel has seen its fair share of screen incarnations, including the itchy 1976 classic from director Brian De Palma, a 1999 sequel (“The Rage: Carrie 2”), and a 2002 television movie. That Hollywood has renewed interest in the material makes perfect sense, though this version is more of a remake than a fresh realization of King’s original book. Playing it safe to appeal to a generation that hasn’t been exposed to this tale of telekinetic woe, the new “Carrie” is much like the old “Carrie,” only now the mayhem is more hard drive-based than wonderfully, inventively practical.

A withdrawn 18-year-old girl, Carrie (Chloe Grace Moretz) struggles to fit in with her high school class, bullied to the extreme by Chris (Portia Doubleday), who attempts to destroy the outcast by posting a humiliating video of her online. At home, Carrie is subjected to the wrath of her deranged mother Margaret (Julianne Moore), a fundamentalist woman who views her daughter as evil that requires suppression and prayer. Initially going along with the hazing, Sue (Gabriella Wilde) grows to regret her behavior, hoping to change Carrie’s life by urging boyfriend Tommy (Ansel Elgort) to ask her to prom, making her feel special. Although Carrie is suspicious about Tommy’s motives, she agrees, while Chris, ejected from the festivities by gym teacher Ms. Desjardin (Judy Greer), plans her comeuppance with older boyfriend Billy (Alex Russell), unaware that the fragile girl has developed telekinetic powers she’s learning to control.

“Carrie” is directed by Kimberly Peirce, who made a smashing debut with 1999’s “Boys Don’t Cry,” and then halted that momentum with 2008’s insufferable “Stop-Loss.” “Carrie” doesn’t do much to restore Peirce’s once towering promise, but it does manage to capture the current atmosphere of bullying. With mobile devices now able to broadcast vile acts of humiliation to eyes everywhere, Carrie is subjected to a different kind of torment than the type found in 1976, with Chris a more malevolent force, quick to hide behind the comfort of her lawyer father as she orchestrates the ultimate horror show for girl whose only crime was being completely unaware of her menstrual cycle. The tampon-pelting scene does return for this “Carrie,” but it’s captured on a cell phone, uploaded to YouTube for the ultimate embarrassment. Also interesting is the titular character’s investigation into her powers, taking to the internet to research telekinesis, discovering books on the subject and watching videos of this “magic” in motion.

“Carrie” builds superbly. While De Palma’s take was decidedly cinematic, Peirce’s work is journeyman-quality, with a satisfying concentration on mounting pressure as Chris maps out her prom night revenge, Sue grows a conscience, and Carrie figures out her limits of her mental skills while dealing with Margaret’s obsessive acts of containment. Although there are no surprises, the new “Carrie” captures motivations quite well, allowing the viewer to understand the headspace of the characters and how they’ll collide in the second half. The young cast also performs acceptably, finding Doubleday a treat as the reprehensible brat Chris, and Wilde summoning believable remorse as Sue. The screenplay doesn’t color outside the lines, but there’s dramatic stability and moral inspection in the first half of “Carrie” that suggests the production understands the juvenile details of the story, taking its time to explore modern angst before all hell breaks loose.

Once Carrie enters the prom, the movie simply abandons all inspiration. Tracing over known elements, “Carrie” turns into a visual effects free-for-all that turns the fun of textured bloodletting and massive destruction into a CGI demo reel that’s unbearably artificial. Even simple shots are touched by computers, giving the film a glossy sheen that contrasts poorly with the gut-wrenching display of Carrie’s significant powers, triggered by the iconic pig’s blood (also CGI) prank. Fans of the brand name will know exactly what’s in store for those who wronged the freaked out teen, but it’s disappointing to watch Peirce run through the motions without dialing up the pandemonium of the moment. The prom showdown and subsequent community-wide chaos doesn’t carry the heft “Carrie” requires to shred nerves, feeling oddly insignificant after such an extended set-up.

As “Carrie” devolves into an elaborate paint-by-numbers assignment, the feature loses steam, unable to develop much tension. Stars Moretz and Moore put forth the required effort of trembling overacting, but it’s not enough to snap the movie out of its coma, with the film eventually limping to ridiculous ending that, strangely, doesn’t go for the De Palma jump scare. It’s obvious that the new “Carrie” was made for a younger generation unaware of previous incarnations, and newcomers might be able to squeeze some entertainment value out of the picture. Those with awareness of the material will be offered more of the same, only here the production didn’t pony up for fake blood.
